What to do and what not to do in your classroom as a new teacher

I was thinking lately, since l had an opportunity to be a teacher for one hour...well thirty minutes to be exact...figuring what to do and what not to do in a classroom as a new teacher.

Always every beginning is hard, trying to adjust to the feeling of being in charge and having other people depend on you seems scary and terrifying at the same time that's why l came up with some ideas on what to do and not to do in your classroom.

First of all, you should not be friends with your students. Yes you can try to have a friendly conversation when you have a five minute break or when not teaching but not when in class or in the middle of the lesson. If you do it just one time your students are going to want to do it again and skip lesson and not focus on important things. Remember that you are there to give and spread knowledge not make them laugh.
Secondly, explaining for hours and being the one who talks all the time is not good either, let your students talk too. Invite them to say whatever they feel like saying even if it's wrong, but as long as what they say its related to the lesson or subject.
Thirdly, the time when you give out new information should always be in the beginning of the class not in the end or in the last minutes. If you start doing exercises first and then class work and then explaining new information students will be very tired to absorb what your saying and they won't remember anything nor know what's going on, all they will think about is when is the lesson going to end.
Lastly, let your students work on their own or in pairs and groups this way they will use their knowledge to figure out different types of exercises, they will work in groups with each other and share their information with each other. Also working in groups or pairs makes them feel involved in the lesson more if you are the only one talking. This way they also correct each other and learn from each other.

To conclude, l would like to say that everyone knows their class better and their students better, so when teaching do your best to make your students and yourself comfortable and keep in mind that you are the best judge so give your best and do as much as you can to deliver a pleasant experience.

  2. Hi Arjola I would agree upon your last sentence that surely we are judges by ourselves and once we know the typologies our students have we can adjust to their needs and make them feel good. The topic you chose was really interesting and I liked it a lot. Thanks.
