Cooperative learning
In my third blog l am going to treat a topic that l think it's particularly important because it was one of my favorite methods to learn in school, cooperative learning.
Cooperative learning is basically separating your students into small groups and have them learn a new concept together, share information with each other and more importantly learn from one another. Cooperative learning is a structured method that gives each member of the group the ability to be involved, to work, speak and discuss for the topic or concept being treated in the class.
Some of the advantages of cooperative learning are:
Individual accountability - students will do their own and best work, then share it with the group, performance of groups will depend also on each person's personal performance.
Group processing - by reflecting on the learning process the effectiveness of contributions in the group improves.
Interpersonal and social skills - students work together, trust each other and they resolve conflicts constantly to achieve a common goal.
Promotive Interaction - students assist and interact with each other to solve problems.
Positive Interdependence - students work as cohesive groups to achieve shared learning objectives.
Among advantages we also have some advantages of cooperative learning:
Students might hate working in groups - some students feel better when they don't have to interact with other people to make an assignment and having alone time for them is crucial.
One student might end up doing all work - not always happens but sometimes it does. One students might feel obligated to do all the work as others just sit around and won't participate.
Grade sharing- when the final grade is given for group work, some students might disagree.
Losing control of the class- even though working in groups might be fun for students its not that fun for teachers especially if you can't manage the classroom and everyone starts having a chat instead of working.
Every teaching method has it's own different procedures and difficulties but giving up it is not an option. Try working this way with your students to see how well they can interact with each other. In my opinion, in our time of living, cooperative teaching is a structured way on how to make each group member a stronger individual capable of dealing with a big world that we have nowadays.
hi Ariola, I like the way you separated each advantage or benefits of cooperative learning. It is a very important strategy for each of us, because we should benefit a lot from everyone.
ReplyDeleteHey Ariola. I liked the graphic you put in there and the way you organized the writing in paragraphs and bolds to make it beautiful for the the eye. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHello Ariola! I like the way you structure your thoughts as they are very coherent. All the information was super helpful, and anyone who has had difficulties understanding what this method is after reading this will be more than clear. The advantages outlined perfectly how good of a method this is and from what I’ve read from different resources it is one of the most effective methods in teaching. For me, the closing paragraph was the one that fascinated me the most because you didn't only relate this method with teaching but also the world that surrounds us as it will help us in both.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. :)
